Princeton photographer RICARDO BARROS will discuss is work and book entitled, Facing Sculpture: A Portfolio of Portraits, Sculpture and Related Ideas. The talk, book signing and slide show is scheduled for June 6, 7pm.

Mr. Barros has photographed artists he knew from his days of serving as the principle photographer at Grounds For Sculpture at Hamilton, New Jersey. He shot 100 sculptors in all and on average, spent a half-day with each sculptor exposing 48 to 96 frames.

Mr. Barros will present a slide show of his work which puts both the artist and the artist’s work in the same frame. The way he is able to mesh the art work and the artist is compelling and highly original. Pleaes rsvp to 856 327 4500. RSVP required. Free of charge.

Silver Visions, the current exhibition in the Main Gallery, featuring Ricardo Barros and Connie Wellnitz, curated by Michelle Post and Liz Nicklus, will be on view until June 14. Connie Wellnitz’s presents meticulously hand-colored, film-based photographs. Also being exhibited are Susan Rau and Doris Botts in the Alcove. There is an Older Adults Exhibition in the Atrium. Also in the Atrium is the work by Army Specialist Michael Shelton along with photographs taken in Iraq during his tour of duty. In the Witt Gallery, the Café Artists are featured. Upstairs in the studio work by the 4^th & 5^th grades of Silver Run School are displayed.

Come out on June 6 for Ricardo Barros’ talk and enjoy all the diverse work throughout the galleries. The Gallery Shop has many new pieces that are whimsical and great for the shore house. Russ Greco’s fish sculptures are delightful fun.

If passed, the Act would radically alter copyright laws, taking away the automatic copyright now guaranteed to artists of all types who create any type of work. Right now, under U.S. law, you are automatically guaranteed copyright on everything you create, from thesketches in your sketchpad to your best paintings and sculptures.Under the Orphan Works Act, every creator will be required to register everything he or she creates in a private registry system, requiringa fee of course, and supposedly to make it easier for the "public" tosearch for works and contact the creators if they want to use the works for some purpose.Everything created in the last 30 years will need to be registered through this as-yet nonexistent system, including those works already registered via additional fees with the copyright office. If they aren't, and some member of the public makes "due diligence" to find the creator of a work and can't find him or her, that member of the public is entitled to use the work without any limitations, andartists will have no legal recourse. That means every piece of workyou have out there, especially online, would be open season for use bymajor publishing houses and businesses (Microsoft who owns one ofthe largest online image databases and Google have already voicedsupport for the bill and indicated they will use thousands of images)and everyone in between.Proponents of the bill say it will assist the public in identifyingand contacting creators of works and going through the proper channelsto contact them to ask for permission. While we understand the needfor an organized system of search, there are MAJOR FLAWS in theproposed bill that need to be addressed before any such proposalshould take place. Here are a few points:Under this law, you would need to register every piece of work you create, including those works that you have already registered withthe Copyright Office officially, in some system that does not existand would likely require you to pay to do so. The time and cost to dothis is going to be prohibitive for visual artists.While this is meant to apply to all types of creative works, including music and literary, visual artists will be impacted the most because of the sheer volume of work we create, making it very expensive toregister everything you have ever created or will create.For the visual arts, there would still be little protection for youand your work, even if it is registered, because search tools wouldrely on names of artists or titles of work, and not image recognitiontools, which are still in their infancy of development.Under this law, if you register your work, you would have to respond to EVERY inquiry sent to you for use of the work. So in other words,if you have a work out there in a registry system, and some person contacts you and says he wants to use your work for free on his Website or in his new catalog, you would need to take the time to fficially respond to every inquiry within a specified time limit,letting him know if you do not want to have him publish your work forfree. Attached is a picture from the unveiling of the Cedarville Peaceworks Mural that Kathy Gross created with the 21st Century students at that school. It is so beautiful and compelling that I truly believe it will bring contentment to many children and staff for years to come. It is filled with inspirational quotes from a variety of sources. Hope you get to see it in person which is truly the only way it can be appreciated to gain its full impact.

Another wonderful new development is Helen Clymer Studio in Residence Artist volunteering her time to provide a free 3rd Friday workshop for children visiting the center.

The Many Faces of Cumberland County-Photographic Visions of People in Cumberland County

Cumberland County Library is inviting Cumberland County amateur and professional photographers to submit from 1-3 photographs for a juried photographic exhibit to be held for3 months. Enter your favorite photographs of people in Cumberland County

Photographs can be babies, teens, adults, seniors, family photos, people and dogs, cats, birds, horses and other animals, people and recreational activities, people at work, ethnic diversity, etc.

Photographs will be hung in the hall/gallery on the lower level of the library.

The show is open to all photographers 18 years or older. All work must be wired and ready to be hung. Photographs may be 4”x6” up to 11”x14” in black and white or color. Each photograph must have the name, address, telephone number and title of the work firmly attached to the back of the mounting.

Cash prizes will be awarded as follows: first place $200; second place, $100 and 3^rd place, $50. The exhibit will be open to the public on May 28 and will close at the end of August.

The purpose of the exhibit is to show the diversity of people in Cumberland County and to foster the visual artists.

Photographers should bring their photographs to the Cumberland County Library on May 21 and pick them up on August 27.

Can YOU Keep a Promise?

Can you remember what happened five years ago on May 14? Close your eyes (virtually)...think back...busloads of arts advocates gathering on a cloudy day bringing a wave of color to West State Street. There was a Chinese dragon marching, docents dressed in colonial costumes, Tony Randall, Eric Bogosian, John Amos, Kiki Smith, Joe Piscopo, and a throng of cultural advocates waving placards and banners demanding that New Jersey arts and history funding be saved from elimination. On that day in May state legislators promised survival and enough to get by for one year, but also a new and dedicated source of State funding that would guarantee increased support in the future.

Okay, open your eyes. It's five years later...we have a hotel/motel occupancy fee that is the dedicated source of guaranteed increased funding and yet the Governor has proposed the level of state cultural support to be exactly the same as the year of bare survival. This is a promise?

The legislation passed in June 2003 to create the occupancy fee, the result of your advocacy, will this year grow to $90 million in State revenues, over three times the amount mandated under it for distribution to cultural agencies. It has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in property tax relief as it was designed to do. Yet State arts and history funding only achieved the level promised by law in FY05 and FY06. Ever since it has fallen short, and now we are back to the bare minimum allowed before the law no longer exists. This is a promise?

Can YOU keep a promise for more than five years??? TOO REAL IS TOO REAL is a juried exhibition of paintings and sculpture by artists of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware which explores the lasting impact of Surrealism on present day art making. The artists in this exhibition have come to the idea of the 'surrealist image' by way of a variety of paths.

The works in this exhibition will have less to do with Surrealism as a historical object, and more to do with how the surreal continues to breathe uncanny life into the art of the present, and informs the differing visions that artists present today.

Thirty works including sculpture, paintings, drawings and collages will be available for sale. Many Associate Artists of RRCA will be participating as well as several artists from the tri-state area. For more images, contact Carolyne.Krull@rrca.us.

Teen/Young Adult Open Mic Friday April 4

Hello Performers, Audience, and Friends.
Just a reminder that it's time again for the monthly Teen and Young Adult Open mic
upstairs at the RRCA studios, Glasstown Arts District, 22 N. High Street Millville, NJ.

Join us Friday April 4th 6-8pm and showcase your talents or "force" your talented friends to sign up and show their stuff! We need YOU to perform your original work and what is a performance without an audience? So even if you are shy and don't want to perform, please come out and support local talent.

Poetry, Music ,Rant, Comedy, (covers in moderation please, we want to hear what YOU have to say) or any other performance worthy trick you have up your sleeve is welcome. This month we will also briefly be highlighting a new trend in open mics, Story Slam. We'll explain it and let it fly at the mic. Basically you draw a subject from a hat and you have 3 min to tell your personal story that relates to that topic. The audience awards points to the performers and most points wins. No prizes though, just prestige in this performance community of ours! This won't take up the entire evening, just a taste.
So if you want to stretch your creative muscles or get your feet wet as a first time performer, join us at the RRCA!

Barn Studio Alumni -- The Early Years & More

The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts and The Barn Studio of Art have collaborated on Barn Studio Alumni The Early Years featuring 20 artists. The artists exhibiting in this show are among the first students to have studied at The Barn Studio of Art when Pat Witt opened the Barn doors in 1962.

Since 1962, Pat has taught and inspired thousands of children and adults with her enthusiasm for the arts and nature. Recognized for her many achievements, Pats biggest reward comes from seeing many of her students go on to become accomplished freelance artists, painters, potters, architects, photographers, commercial artists, illustrators, graphic designers and art teachers. She is equally proud of those students who have gone on to many other professions as inspired individuals. This show will be the first of a series of Barn Studio Alumni shows.

The artists featured for this opening alumni show are:

One of the key reasons for seeking a non-profit status, a decision made by Pat and her daughters, was to perpetuate the Barn for the future. Over the last few years, with the inception of the RRCA and the Arts District in downtown Millville, Pat and her daughters wish to see the arts community continue to flourish with The Barn Studio of Art as a vital part of it. They are interested in hearing from former students and especially those who may be interested in participating in future alumni shows or even teaching at The Barn.

What makes it special: Designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Main Street Community in 2004, the Glasstown Arts District has been thriving for more than eight years. With affordable, mixed-use properties featuring period architecture, monthly art walks, a large public art center with gallery and studio spaces, and lots of cultural activities, this river town of 26,000 is an energetic place to call home.

What it offers: The town’s annual marketing budget clocks in at just over $300,000, bringing in a lot of tourists. Plus, if you purchase a mixed-use property in the Glasstown Arts District, you can get a facade grant of up to $10,000 (1:1 match) to improve the front of your home. While many Main Street Communities offer such grants for businesses in their districts, it’s the mixed-use designation that makes Millville unique among grant programs.

Art mag paints Millville as hot spot: City says honor is 'a very big deal'

MILLVILLE -- A national publication has etched Millville into its list of top arts districts.

The March issue of Art Calendar, a national business publication for visual artists, lists the top cities for working artists. Millville is the only Garden State town to make the list.

Marianne Lods, executive director of Main Street Millville and Glasstown Arts District, said the city will use the new distinction on its advertisements and promotions. "It's a very big deal," she said of the listing. "It's very important, because artists will live and work in areas that need renovation and revitalization."

The district, now in its eighth year, has 16 galleries, which displays the works of about 150 artists, Lods said. But the city wants to do more.

On Monday, local artists and other city officials met for the monthly Mayor's Arts Task Force to discuss ways to bring new artists to the city. Proposals include a fellowship program, and creating new grants and loan programs, Lods said.

"I know we were growing, but we have a long way to continue to develop and grow," she said. When the New Jersey Motorsports Park opens in the summer, "we have to be ready to step up the to the plate and hit a home run."

The distinction already has helped the district, Lods said.

Last Friday, a Las Vegas-based artist called Lods to discuss relocating to the city, after she saw the list.

The publication considered criteria such as artist relocation programs, financial assistance, reasonably priced workspace, tax benefits and marketing assistance.

Art Calendar's editor Kim Hall, who wrote the story, said hundreds of communities are trying to create arts districts, but Millville is unique because of the district's success in helping artists.

"They focus on artists and want them to have an established community and make a good living," she said.

Hall said the districts were not ranked in any particular order.

Art Calendar credited Millville for its annual marketing budget of more than $300,000 and a grant program for artists to upgrade their façade.

This was the first time the publication, which has a circulation of about 15,000, created this type of list, Hall said. The publication relied mostly on reputations among artists, she said.

"A lot of places will have one artist move in, and they're very proud of that," she said. "Millville is making it a very strong place for artists to live."

Maryann Cannon, owner of the La Bottega of Art and The Village on North High Street, has found the city much more accommodating than other towns. Cannon got a low interest loan to open her businesses, which displays works of several other artists.

The city "called and said 'we want you,'" Cannon said.

The artists all talk to each other, and their works all complement one another, Cannon said.

"The artists have a say" in the district, she said.

The Millville PAL Family Night at the Holly City Family Center attracted over 170 children last Friday despite the snow and rain. Children and parents flocked to PAL's kick-off event. They received water safety instruction, free swim time, areobic and fitness workouts. The City of Millville's Weed and Seed program gave out bike helmets to 80 children.

On March 14, Millville PAL will be adding art "make it & take it" projects to these offerings. Artists and community members are encouraged to fill out volunteer applications and get involved. Millville PAL has a calendar of events for volunteers to help out with

It's not too late to sign up for the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts bus trip to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit. Almost every newspaper is featuring the Kahlo exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is the only stop along the east coast for this exhibition of 40 paintings by the influential painter on the 100th anniversary of her birth. The exhibit will only travel to only 2 other museums. Regarded for her ability to fuse Mexican folk arts with Modernism, her self-portraits chronicle a life full of accomplishment and triumph over physical limitations. Frida Kahlo developed the small-scale self-portrait style when she was recovering from severe spinal injuries which kept her from painting on site or in a large format. Call for all painters, printers, photographers, draftsmen to submit quintessential scenes of Millville. Possible categories might be: History, Humor, Events, Downtown, Neighborhoods. These are only suggestions. Get creative and surprise the judges from The Post Card Club of South Jersey (for RRCA) and the judges (t/b/a) for Bogart Books, Steelman’s and Revelation Records. Six different works will be selected by judges for each of the following locations: the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, Steelman’s, Bogart’s Books and Revelation Records. Each location will produce postcards from each of the 6 images that are chosen by their judges. Each location will have 6 different postcards for sale.

Each of the local businesses will exhibit the selected works from April 3^rd Friday through May in their windows. Additionally, from the winning images, judges will select 12 images for a 2009 calendar also to be sold at the above locations. A “People’s Choice Award” will be chosen during the exhibition for the calendar cover.

Postcards: Millville in the Mail

The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts invites you to participate in “Postcards: Millville in the Mail” to be held January 18, 2008 through February 9, 2008, in the Witt Gallery.

Works will be judged on their impact as illustrations of Millville’s history, rebirth and attractions as well as their applicability to the promotion of Millville and the Arts District. A total of twenty-four images will be selected for reproduction as postcards to be placed on sale at the RRCA, Steelman’s, Bogart’s Books, and Revelation Records (6 for each location.) The artist’s name and copyright notice will be included in the credit section on the back of every postcard. Postcards will not be limited to official USPS sizes but proportion, i.e. too square or too long and narrow, will be a factor in selection. Some cropping may be necessary in reproduction. SEE FLYER FOR MORE INFO!!

There is no entry fee. Entrants grant the each location the sole right to reproduce and sell the winning entries as postcards and to reproduce those images for promotions. The artist will not receive payment from the sale of the postcards. Every postcard or promotional piece promotes you and your image. All copyrights, beyond the publication of the images as postcards, remain with the artist. .

Eligibility:

1. Artists may submit up to three original works in any 2D media (drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, etc.) completed within the past 10 years.

2. No piece may exceed 24” X 36,” including frame. Minimum size of image: 8”x10” All work must be wired for hanging and suitably framed (no clips or fast frames). Works on paper and photographs must be glazed. It will be necessary to remove winning works from their frames for reproduction.

3. RRCA will not assemble any item and reserves the right to reject any work that requires an inordinate amount of difficulty in

handling. No wet, fragile, or ill-prepared work will be accepted.

4. All work must be for sale. A 40% commission will be retained by the RRCA on the sale of any artwork, unless the artist is an Associate Member.

5. Label: Back right hand corner of each piece, including: Artist’s Name, Title, Medium and Price, with no personal contact information.

6. All works selected for exhibition will remain for the duration of the show and may not be withdrawn until designated pick up dates.

Receiving Dates: All works must be delivered to the RRCA on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, from 11- 5.

Judging: Works will first be selected for exhibition Notification of selection/non-selection will be on Wed, 11/16 after 5PM. Pick-up of work not selected for exhibition is Thurs, 1/17, 11AM -5PM. Millville, NJ, The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts announces a solo exhibition of landscape paintings by artist Stan Sperlak of Cape May Court House, N.J., from November 15-December 30, 2007 in their main gallery.

This show will mark Sperlak's first return to Millville since 2003. He works in pastel on various grounds, and is most noted for his boldly colorful paintings done on location throughout the Mid Atlantic. There will be several field studies in the show, but this show focuses mostly on works that are studio paintings derived from the many studies he does outdoors.

The paintings on exhibit cover a broad range of colors and moods of the Southern New Jersey landscape. Sperlak continues his exploration of the simple horizons and dominant skies that have become symbolic in his work. While several of the paintings may be recognizable locations to viewers, the intent of many others is to allow the landscape to become just a point of departure where the action of painting begins, and the colors and surfaces that evolve, are themselves the subject.

Greetings!

With fall in full swing and the Holiday season around the corner, this is the time of the year that causes us to pause, reflect on past successes, and plan for the future. The future is a challenging one, but the spirit of the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, its guiding mission and vision, its staff and volunteers stand ready to meet all the future holds...but only with your help.

RRCA's ability to develop and expand our capacity to serve the community depends on ths success of this Fall Giving Campaign. RRCA serves the greater Cumberland County community in varied ways. On premises, 10 artists have art studios on the second floor and there are over 100 artist members who exhibit their work in the galleries and at off-site locations at numerous times throughout the year. In RRCA's four gallery spaces, artists' exhibits change monthly. In the Gallery Shop, 45 artistis and artisans show their prints and one-of-a-kind pieces. On average, about 400 artists display and sell their work during the year.

These artists, in turn share their expertise with students by teaching in the Arts Creates Excellence Porgram (ACE) program or in the 21st Century Learning Community. ACE programming reaches art students ages 3 to 93 and includes a five week summer camp, after-school sessions, a Neighborhood Mural Program, gallery tours and studio time for Silver Run Elementary School Students, and ACE for the Older Adult, a program that brings community artists to a population that lacks the mobility to travel. Here is what participants in RRCA ACE programming have to say about their experiences:

Through these programs the RRCA provides important after-school and summer arts programming to students who might not otherwise enjoy exposure to the arts. Children of Children Exhibit in Millville NJ. Kids discuss teen pregnancy

Students are asked to confront questions and issues concerning teen pregnancy. This is part of the outreach by Cumberland County Human Services Advisory Council, FAMCare, North Jersey Plannned Parenthood partnering with the RRCA. Children of Children, Portraits and Stories of Teenage Parents is a multimedia traveling exhibition by photographer Michael Nye. The exhibit is a collection of stories of men and women ranging in age from 12 to 100 whose lives have been affected by teenage pregnancy. Approxmately 20 schools in Cumberland County have scheduled visits for students from 4th grade through 12th. Each class takes about 45 minutes listening to the voices of people in the photographs. As they stare into the picture, the glass reflects their image back to them. One class was very animated, talking to one another about the stories they had heard and taking their friends to see the photograghs. Most groups listen intently to the stories in total silence. Then with their teacher and the facilitator (with counseling background) , they get together for a discussion on the exhibition and its related topics. The discussion includes drug abuse and having enough education. The discussion turns to how a teen's social life will be altered along with parents and friends. Students are asked what profession or job they would like to have. They think about how having a baby would curtail their future plans

The RRCA is featuring "Children of Children: Stories and Portraits of Teenage Parents" by renown photographer, Michael Nye. This traveling exhibition is sponsored by the Cumberland County Human Services Advisory Council. There will be 50 black & white portraits with recorded narratives of the subjects ranging in age from 12 to 100. This show is specifically designed for middle and high school aged students. Cumberland County has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in New Jersey. While the rate in the state is declining, Cumberland Countys teen pregnancy is growing. Among the nations 458 counties, Cumberland County, NJ is 25^th in proportion of teen births to total births. In 2004, over 17% of all births were to teens.

The Children of Children exhibit will in no way condemn, condone, or romanticize teenage pregnancy. It will however provide its viewers with an inside look into the lives of those affected by teen pregnancy. This exhibit is both a work of art and an exploration of a critical social issue.

I was 14 when I got pregnant. Im 17 now and wonder will I ever be able to buy things for my daughter, get a drivers license, or pay my bills.

This is an excerpt from one story included in Children of Children. Each story in this compelling exhibit will provide viewers with insight on the many effects of teenage pregnancy. The intent of this unique learning opportunity is to open our eyes to the impact teenage pregnancy has on oneself, ones family, and our communities. The voices of the individuals in the portraits draw you in, not by telling you what you should not do, but by simply describing how their lives were affected by a teen pregnancy.

On Monday September 17th, the Millville Development Corporation honored city employees, downtown merchants, artists, and volunteers who have improved Millville and its downtown. The event was held in the main gallery at the RRCA. It was a chance for folks who work hard to have fun and receive recognition. Here are some of the awards given out. Each award was named after a popular song. The "Street Fighting Man" award was awarded to Carl Johnson
The "I am a believer" award was won by Maryann Cannon and the "You Ain't see Nothin Yet" award was give to Linda Raines She is on the 2nd part of the same video with Maryann Cannon. Bogart's Books won the "Eight Days a Week" award for being open every day of the week. The "Knockin on Heaven's Door" prize was won by Christina’s Boutique which is on the Village on High on the 500 block of High Street.Don Cossaboon-DeGregorio got the "Get Up Stand Up" award. The "You are Precisely My Cup of Tea" award was awarded to the Vintage Rose Tea Room Jim Penlyn won the "With a Little Help from my Friends" award for opening his studio and shop called JB and Me in the Art District. One of the architects of the Millvile Arts District Kim Warker won the "We Can Work it Out" award. She does deserve this award with all that she does for Millville. The next award was given to Isabelle Samuel She won the "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" for her wonderful colorful studio and shop on High Street. The "There's No Business like Show Business" award went to Sitar Bob Price. He is holding the 2nd AnnualSEPTEMBER SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL on Friday September 28th. Our Executive Director Carolyne Krull won the "Lean on Me" award for developing strong relationships between the RRCA and Main Street Millville. Two new businesses in downtown Millville Flynn Interiors and Blac and Blue received the "Welcome to the Jungle" award for starting their businesses in Millville.Skyline Antiques received the "Staying Alive" award for having the business on the 3rd floor with no elevator.The Emcee's of the festivities were Marianne Loads and Tim Shannon. They were excellent and made the evening very fun for everyone. Marianne Loads and Allison Corson were thanked by Tim Shannon for all the work they do day in and day out for the Glasstown Arts District and Main Street. This summer RRCAs ACE students had wonderful fun creating amazing art work. Now is time to sign up for the fall ACE classes which begin Tuesday, September 18. Children from ages 3-18 can deepen their experience of art by taking classes at the RRCA where the galleries are filled with a wide variety of artistic creations. RRCAs dedicated teachers are planning great new projects to develop their students talents and interests. The fall ACE session lasts for 10 weeks and is only $60that is only $6 a class! There will be a ACE exhibition opening at the end of the session so parents, friends and family can see what the children worked on and celebrate their accomplishments.

On 3rd Friday July 20th 2007, the RRCA held its Associate Artist Show. There were seven artists that spoke. The first to speak was Pat Proniewski who is a ceramicist. Next to speak was Diane Emerson who's presentation is at the bottom of this posting. She is also a ceramicist. Seppo Siimes spoke about one of his landscape paintings. Dorothy Botts explains how she started to be a painter. The artist to speak after her was Jimmy Walker , who's medium is pencil. Libby Rothfarb describes herself as a "watercolorist" explained that her training was in botany and this love of flowers. Donna Pio works in oil's and she states she started painting when her grown daughter was a year old. She has studied under Pat Witt for many years.

In addition to the Main Gallery exhibit, Drawing the Line, the Associate Artists' Yvonne Yaar and Anthony Thompson in the Alcove, and Society of New Jersey Artists in the Witt Gallery, RRCA will also be featuring the work of Gerald Lynch, sculptor, from August 17 - September 15.

NY Times reviewer, Fred B. Adelson, wrote that Gerald Lynchs voluptuous female figures, which he calls earth goddesses, emerge from the blocks of marble in contrapposto stances, immediately bringing to mind Michelangelo and the classical tradition of stone-cutting. In contrast, the rough-hewn bases from which his figures rise suggest both the earth's energy forces and sculptured supports created by Brancusi. ''I perceive marble as a sacred medium -- earth bone formed hundred of millions of years ago,'' Mr. Lynch states. ''And the experience of carving it, although physically demanding, is a spiritual one.''

The RRCA is honored to have Gerald Lynchs work here in the Witt Gallery along with the Society of New Jersey Artists. SNJAs exhibition theme is water. And Lynchs next work, had he lived, was to be based on a water theme. So through the cooperation of Jenny Klein, SNJA president, and Cheryl Crews, from whose collection the work is taken, the Riverfront Center is proud to show pieces in marble, limestone and bronze. The award-winning film on his life and work will be shown through out the exhibit.

What: Dodge Foundation awards Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts Grant in the Amount of $23,000
Where: Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, 22 N. High Street, in Millville's Glasstown Arts District, NJ

The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, NJ a grant in the amount of $23,000 for support of RRCA's community building and individual art projects, classes, workshops and forums. In a letter dated July 2, 2007, David Grant, CEO and President of the Dodge Foundation, quoted a report from the MacArthur Foundation: There is no better indicator of the spiritual health of our city, its neighborhoods, and the larger region than the state of the arts. The arts deepen our understanding of the human spirit, extend our capacity to comprehend the lives of others, allow us to imagine a more just and humane world. Through their diversity of feeling, their variety of form, their multiplicity of inspiration, the arts make our culture richer and more reflective. Millville's health, in these terms, has definitely improved vastly over the last 6 years. Citizens have the opportunity to enjoy a richness of fine art and crafts in splendid abundance.

The Dodge Foundation, who supported RRCA's work with the neighborhood school children in creating 3 outstanding murals, looks forward to what Cumberland County children will create in the next round of mural paint-ins. RRCA's Carolyne Krull has been discussing the possibilities of combining mural creation and a curriculum in conflict transformation with Cumberland Empowerment Zone's Director, Cindy Angelo.

Also made possible by this funding will be the expansion of the Arts Creates Excellence to serve senior citizens along with the youth that have gained so much from the ACE program. RRCA will be working with artist Dorothy Conti to begin the program at the Jaycee Plaza, Genesis Healthcare and Spring Oak Assisted Living this summer.

The adoption of Silver Run School by the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts will also be funded by the Dodge Grant. Trips to the Arts Center with studio time and gallery talks for the students are planned in coming school year. RRCA is pleased to be able to partner with Judy Kessler, Silver Run's Vice Principal, on bringing more resources to Millville's inner-city students.

One of the area's master artists, George Cheety, is showing a small sample of his oeuvre in the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts Gallery Shop. This is a rare opportunity to view his delicate renderings. He last showed with Mo Pagano and Fred Manders at the Vineland Art Alliance. Mr. Cheety is a regular visitor to the RRCA, where he is known to enjoy the many artists on display here. His friend, local artist and mathematician Larry Ericksen, and he usually make a day of visiting the Glasstown Arts District at least once a month. It is always such a pleasure to chat with George. Now to have his work here is a special treat!

WHAT: RRCA KICKS OFF SUMMER ART EDUCATION WITH SHINE CAMP IN NEW STUDIO SPACE
WHERE: RIVERFRONT RENAISSANCE CENTER FOR THE ARTS, 22 N. HIGH STREET, IN MILLVILLE'S GLASSTOWN ARTS DISTRICT, NJ

The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts is proud to announce the First United Methodist Church SHINE Camp for inner-city were enjoyed an afternoon of art in RRCA's new art classroom. Along with Joanne Reger's many SHINE volunteers, RRCA volunteers, Jen Kirchner and Yajaira Montero, led 20 Shine campers through 3 art projects on Thursday, July 5. The new space is located in the backroom which up until now has been used for storage and 3rd Friday preparation. Due to the generosity of Marie Carley, the room is newly tiled by Don B Franks and looks beautiful. Sculptor, David Carrow, stepped in and planed the door to fit the raised floor. The room needed climate control and the RRCA purchased an air conditioning/heater which will be installed with the help of Don Cossaboon, Thundersun Forge. When the ACE classes begin on July 9, the Junior Artists's classes will be held in the new studio classroom.

The teen Associate Artists classes will also have a new space thanks to so many people. The entire upstairs was painted by volunteers from the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 711. Joe Derella, Millville City Commissioner, and Nelson Thompson, IUPAT, arranged with Dan Scioli, the local Business Representative, to ask the Union's workers to lend their expertise to the Art Center. Mark L. Gilde, Dave Suter, Percy Ternley and Ella Turnley spent 2 days finishing the drywall with tape and spackle, cementing and coating walls, and painting. This gave the studios upstairs a bright, clean look, but there was still so much old, heavy material that needed to be removed. One call to Liz Nicke, at the Parks Department, and 5 wonderful people emptied out debris that was so heavy, it seemed that it was there to stay. Much gratitude to: Edward Gandy, Adam Seitz, Rodney Menz, R.J. Tambellini, Mike Cimino and Belford Hawn for accomplishing the impossible. Also many thanks to Mark Krull and Jay Helfrich for their on-going support with all these projects. The RRCA is happy and grateful to all the people who gave of their time and talents to make this renovation project a reality.

Saturday, October 13, 2007, 11am to 6pm

Calling all Cumberland County Artists and Artisans

Join us for the largest open studio event in Cumberland County. Artists who live in Cumberland County are eligible. Work in traditional and experimental media are welcome, including painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramic artists, furniture makers, fiber artists, and more. This event is free to the public and organized by artists for artists.

Open studios encourage art lovers and collectors from the New Jersey and Philadelphia region to view your artwork in an informal yet intimate setting. Participating in this event will help cement Cumberland County as the destination for the arts in South Jersey.

Benefits to Participating Artists:

Your name and contact information, the medium(s) you work in, and a map of your studios location distributed throughout Cumberland County and the Philly metropolitan area.
50 large color invitations that will include location map and up to 10 artists work on the cover to send to your mailing list. All participating artists will be listed on card and indicated on map.
Digital version of invitation provided.
Listing on all advertising.
Up to five images of work to be included on a continuously running promotional video shown at the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts located at 22 High Street in Millville.

Teens keep cool this summer at RRCA's ACE Camp. Where else can teens go to study painting with Liz Nicklus for a week? Only at the RRCA. Liz will be sharing many of her techniques for combining found objects in painting. Where else can teens spend a day kayaking down the Maurice River with Mike Cagno and Steve Eisenhauer? Only at the RRCA. They will be both learning about the environment and sketching it. Where else can teens spend a week at Clay College and another learning flamework at Carlisle Glass? Only at the RRCA. And there is so much more! Wire sculpture with Don Cossaboon, site-specific sculpture and art history-based projects with Kathy Gross. Creative Writing and Book Making. Make sand mandalas the way Tibetan monks have made them for centuries, the next day make a mosaic. Teens will further their experience in watercolor, pen & ink, drawing, monoprints, linocuts, pastels, and photography. And when it is all done they will design and install their own exhibition. Where else can teens study art while being surrounded by galleries filled a variety of artwork? Only at the RRCA!

The Associate Artists (13-19 years old) begin in the studio at 9am and continue until 2pm, with a break for lunch. This intensive, exploratory approach will give students the time they need to develop their skills. At the same time, RRCA teachers believe studio time should be fun and enjoyable.

For the Junior Artists and Pre-Junior Artists (7-12 years old), the day starts at 9 and continues until Noon. They will be working in all mediums, including going to Clay College for 3 days. The children have a great time making new friends and art. There is a lot of one-on-one instruction when children need it. Students love working in the gallery surrounded by artwork. And they really enjoy seeing their work on exhibition in a real gallery too!

Eligibility:

1. Artists may submit up to three (3) works completed within the past 1 year in an RRCA Class/ Workshop and not previously shown at the RRCA. RRCA will choose at least one piece from each Artist, space relates to quality and diversity of work.

2. Accepting original works in any media completed or started in an RRCA workshop/class.

3. No piece may exceed 50 inches in width and 40 inched in height including frame. All work must be wired for hanging and suitably framed (no clips or fast frames). Watercolors, pastels, drawings, and graphics must be completely glazed.

4. RRCA will not assemble any item, and reserves the right to reject any work that requires an inordinate amount of difficulty in handling.

5. No wet, fragile, or ill-prepared work will be accepted.

6. A 40% commission will be retained by the RRCA on the sale of any artwork.

7. All work must be for sale.

8. Label: Back right hand corner of each piece. Must include: Artist name, Title, Medium, Price.

Entry Fee:

There is no entry fee for Invitational Shows.

Receiving Dates:

All works must be delivered to RRCA on Monday, July 16, from 11am till 5pm. Receiving times will not be extended under any circumstances. Works will be chosen for exhibition. Notification will be on Tuesday, July 17, after 5:00pm. Pick-up of work not selected is Wednesday, July 18, 11-5pm.

Biography:

Submitting artists should provide updated biographical information on receiving day for inclusion in Associate Artist Book. No personal contact information is to be on the art or in the bios because the RRCA is your contact agent for this exhibition.

Reception:

The Opening Reception will be held at the RRCA on Friday, July 20th, 6 – 9 pm. Please bring one light refreshment.

NOTE:

It is understood that all works submitted to this show will remain for the duration of the exhibition and may not be withdrawn until designated pick up dates.

Show Closing:

Exhibition closes on Saturday, August 11. Unsold works must be picked up at the RRCA on Sunday, August 12, 11-4 pm. Storage fees, $10.00 per day, will be levied for items not picked up during these dates.

RRCAs Gala raises funds for its Arts Creates Excellence (ACE) program which provides art education year round for the areas school children from ages 3-18 years. The cost per person is $75. What: An Art Forum and Critique led by artist, Wanda Kline. This is a group of artists and creative people who get together every 6-8 weeks to discuss creative issues. Practicing artists, musicians, and poets are encouraged to work within a given theme and present this work for critiques at the meeting. Your first visit is free. The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts cordially invites you to the 2006 Associate Artists Members Show to be held on July 19th -August 12th, 2007

Eligibility:
1. Associate Artists may submit up to four (4) works completed within the past 1 year and not previously shown at the RRCA or in the City of Millville. RRCA will choose at least one piece from each Associate Member, space relates to quality.
2. Accepting original oils, acrylics, water colors, pastels, drawings, sculpture and photography.
3. No piece may exceed 50 inches in width and 40 inched in height including frame. All work must be wired for hanging and suitably framed (no clips or fast frames). Watercolors, pastels, drawings, and graphics must be completely glazed.
4. RRCA will not assemble any item, and reserves the right to reject any work that requires an inordinate amount of difficulty in handling.
5. No wet, fragile, or ill-prepared work will be accepted.
6. A 30% commission will be retained by the RRCA on the sale of any artwork.
7. All work must be for sale.
8. Label: Back right hand corner of each piece. Must include: Artist name, Title, Medium, Price.
No personal contact information on label.

Entry Fee:
Associate Artists do not pay an entry fee.

Receiving Dates:
All works must be delivered to RRCA on Monday, July 16, from 11am till 5pm. Receiving times will not be extended under any circumstances. Works will be chosen for exhibition. Notification will be on Tuesday, July 17, after 5:00pm. Pick-up of work not selected is Wednesday, July 18, 11-5pm.

Biography:
Submitting artists should provide updated biographical information on receiving day for inclusion in Associate Artist Book. No personal contact information is to be on the art or in the bios because the RRCA is your contact agent for this exhibition.

Reception:
The Opening Reception will be held at the RRCA on Friday, July 20th, 6 – 9 pm. Please bring one light refreshment.

NOTE:
It is understood that all works submitted to this show will remain for the duration of the exhibition and may not be withdrawn until designated pick up dates.

Show Closing:
Exhibition closes on Saturday, August 11. Unsold works must be picked up at the RRCA on Sunday, August 12, 11-4 pm. Storage fees, $10.00 per day, will be levied for items not picked up during these dates.

Second Saturday, February 10, closing of the Barn Group and Glasstown Artists exhibitons.
Begin the morning with a workshop given by master watercolorist Alex Alampi from 9:30 2pm. Bring a bag lunch for a short break. Refreshments will be served.

Then come right down stairs for the first in a series of Meet the Artists. The Associate Artists showing the Artists Alcove will be on hand to discuss their work. Come and learn more about the skills that Art Parkin, Doris Botts, Carol Hiemenz, Michelle Dougherty goes from 2-4pm. Tea sandwiches have been donated by Millvilles lovely Vintage Rose Tea Room. Come enjoy this delicious treat. Tea will also be served. The Songwriters Guild will be on hand to provide musical ambience.

3rd Friday, February 16th, RRCA features its Associate Member Artists in the Main Gallery and Bobbie Berg whose exhibition is entitled, Marking Time: Landscapes Reflecting the Changing Seasons, is in the Witt Gallery. Local guitarist will be playing is own songs.

February 18th is Chinese New Year Members Event, the Celebration of the Year of the Pig, it is also a day to celebrate being a RRCA member or to find out more about membership. If you have been thinking of joining, now is the time to do so. Chinese/Japanese food donated by Peking Tokyo. Chinese Movies. Of course, a Chinese Auction. Learn and participate in the custom of the Wishing Tree. Time: 2-5pm

Ellen Gavin is back by popular demand to teach a second Oil Painting class on Wednesday, February 21, from 9:30 -12:30. Learn the art of simple and effective oil painting. $45 for members and $50 for non-members.

Saturday, February 24 is a busy day with RRCA events. First at the Cumberland County Mall from 10-3pm is the first Cumberland County Youth Expo featuring RRCA ACE students and the Middle School Artist in Residency Program students will have their work on display by Boscovs entrance.

Later that evening at 7pm, Chase away the Mid-Winter Blues with the help of Doug Donnelly, slide blues guitarist.
